We've recently discovered that the Food Bank on 200 West is requesting fresh produce donations.
The mission of "Share the Harvest" is to bring excess garden produce from the back yard of one neighbor to the table of another. Every weekday 80-100 families receive food from Community Action Food Bank, but less than 1% of that fresh produce.
Allison and I feel it would be a good thing to share our blessings as a co-op with members of our community. For example, when we order cilantro, celery, or baby carrots, we have to order by cases and those cases contain more than what we need for 36 people. Whatever is left over after we divide it between our baskets will then be donated to the Food Bank.
Today I delivered approximately 12 bunches of celery, 15 bunches of cilantro, 12 bunches of green onions, 8 bags of baby carrots, 4 heads of cabbage, and leftover jalepenos, anaheim peppers, apples, & bell peppers from our members' gardens. Yes, we could have divided all of that among our baskets, but think of the other families it will bless now!! The worker was so excited when I showed up with literally a grocery cart of food for her to place. As I was leaving, I noticed 3 families receiving food and I was only there for about 10 minutes.
Those co-op members who are sorting each week will receive extra produce as their payment for sorting. You can also trade out some of your veggies for what's in the extra basket or continue to trade with other members of the co-op.
Also, if you are out shopping, it would be lovely if you could pick up extra items to donate to the Food Bank, especially at this time of year. All items are needed..... meat (especially fresh or frozen meat), canned or boxed goods, toiletries, & produce. Someone will be making a delivery every co-op day, so bring your items to our pick-up location when you come to pick up your basket.
If you would like to help Allison and I with deliveries to the Food Bank, let us know. We would greatly appreciate it!!!
